5 ways to manage your boss effectively

Working effectively for your boss is not only about managing yourself but also how you manage your boss. Being clever with how you behave towards your boss and efficiently managing them will result in a more fruitful working relationship.

So, here are 5 top tips on how to best manage your boss…

1. Solutions to problems, NOT complaints
The last thing your boss needs is you approaching him unhappy or cross at a situation and flying off the handle with emotions. Before you start the conversation with your boss, think about a possible solution to the problem or issue you have and after you have explained your upset, suggest how you can move forward. Not only will this save you time but it will make your bosses life a lot easier and mean you will be in the good books J. It will help you work better as a team and your boss will have more respect for you.

2. Build on strengths
It is not rocket science to build on others strengths so why not the boss as well? Spend some time understanding what your boss’s strengths are and offer your assistance in places where you think they may fall down but where your strengths lie.

3. Build your relationship
Building relationships are key across the whole business but especially with your boss. If you can get on well with your boss, you are likely to work better together and enjoy your day to day working life. So, how!? Make sure that you have clear and open communication about everything and anything. Build on the trust and respect that you need to have a good relationship by following through with what you promise, being honest and hardworking. You could always suggest additional socialising or team building activities to get to know your boss better and in a more relaxed environment.

4. Advise and obey
If you disagree with a decision that your boss makes, be confident enough to make an alternative suggestion based on your own feelings. Always advise your boss when you feel necessary but do not forget that your boss has the final say, so once they have made a decision, whether you agree or not, you need to get your head down.

5. Build a network
Networking is crucial to success in business and over time your network can grow and grow indefinitely. It is always great to utilise the resources and access to information through your networks. Get to know everyone or at least more people throughout your organisation and identify how they can assist you and your boss as well. Spend time on social media and also developing relationships externally as well. The more people you get to know, the better for everyone around you.

What is important to remember is that you realise that when you are effective, your boss is and when your boss is effective, you are. This is the route to success, happiness and productivity. Do not feel disheartened if your efforts and suggestions do not realise. All you can do, is try your best and put in as much effort as you possibly can.
